About Us

kansas city optometristsWestGlen Eyecare was founded in 2002 by Dr. Andrea Spruyt. From the first patient on, the focus has been on quality eyecare in a friendly setting. The practice has been built over the years on word-of-mouth referrals from people who appreciate being taken care of like family. There has always been a strong emphasis on not only quality care but also a top-rate selection of eyeglasses and contacts. WestGlen Eyecare prides itself on providing great values to its patients and exceeding expectations.

Dr. Andrea Spruyt:

kansas city eye specialistsDr. Spruyt was raised in Dodge City, KS and has always had an interest in science. She covered her bases by spending time at KSU and KU. She received her BA in Human Biology with honors before attending the University of Missouri St. Louis School of Optometry. During optometry school, she was an intern at a premiere LASIK surgery center and spent a second internship working with challenging contact lens fits. She also discovered the enjoyment of working with pediatrics. One of her passions is making sure children’s visual issues are found and corrected at the earliest age possible.

Dr. Spruyt has taken many opportunities to help educate parents and children regarding the importance of routine eyecare, and was even featured on KCTV news regarding vision problems in kids. She participates in the Infant See Program (6 and 12 months old) and the See To Learn Program (all children age 3), both of which provide early screenings for children at no charge.

Dr. Spruyt is highly nearsighted herself and puts an emphasis on making sure she provides each patient with the best possible correction. Whether it is through LASIK, glasses or contacts, she is able to give the guidance needed for great vision.

Outside the office, Dr. Spruyt enjoys running and swimming. She also enjoys cooking, especially trying different ethnic cuisines. Her boys enjoy some of these attempts, but will be the first to steer you away from their mother’s Moroccan fare.

Dr. Jeffry Gerson:

eye doctors in kansas cityDr. Gerson grew up in northwest Indiana and knew since high school that he wanted to become an optometrist. He went to Indiana University for both undergraduate and optometry school. During optometry school, he had several unique experiences, including two mission trips to Mexico.  In 2005, he was able to also attend a mission trip in Romania.

After graduating optometry school, he did a residency at the Kansas City VA hospital. His first position after graduating was at the KU School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology as faculty. After several other jobs, he joined Dr. Spruyt as partner in WestGlen Eyecare. Dr. Gerson is a great partner with Dr. Spruyt, as he compliments her knowledge in pediatrics and contact lenses with his knowledge and passion for eye diseases that generally occur in older populations.

Outside of the office, Dr. Gerson is a well-known speaker and author in several fields within optometry. By his peers, he is seen as an authority on different retinal conditions, such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He serves on numerous advisory boards and received the 2008 Young OD of the Year award from the Kansas Optometric Association, recognizing his contributions to his profession. He remains an active volunteer in that organization, as well as several others on a local and national level.

He is married to Karen and has 2 young boys, Gilli and Eitan. They enjoy outdoor activities and volunteering together. Family bike rides are a favorite activity.
